These commuters were stuck in snarling end-of-day traffic. I photographed them while they sat at red lights waiting to inch ahead. It is in these idle moments that this slow march of strangers seemed to me most human. Many relaxed enough to just be for a little while -- to stare, to daydream, to eat, to pick their nose, or to sit doing absolutely nothing.

Underneath this in-between state is the feeling that something will change. The stoplight will soon cause a minor, expected change. But there's something else, too, much bigger and moretroubling floating through these pictures.

There's a collective sense of living-as-waiting, a continual holding of the breath, in anxiousanticipation of the next disaster. This is the big waiting -- the stuck feeling, the giving over of control–that mirrors and sometimes leaks out into the small waiting for the light to change.
